Halloween is definitely a favorite holiday for most children. They get to dress up and be whoever or whatever they want to be and get all the candy they could ever dream of having. This Halloween season, the Center for Community Engagement, better known as the CCE, helped put on a couple of Halloween events for the children of Willimantic and neighboring towns.
The first event which is called “Malloween” was held on Oct. 27 at the East Brook Mall over in Mansfield, Conn. The event lasted from 11:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and approximately 100-125 children attended. At this event, not only did all the stores supply candy for the trick or treaters, but the CCE volunteers helped the kids do all kinds of arts and crafts. Some of those fun activities included paper plate paintings, rock monsters, face painting, goodie bags, popsicle stick paintings, and more. They also provided some games for the children as well. Two of the games were toilet paper mummies and witch ring toss.
Another event dedicated to Halloween was “Trick or Trunk,” which was also held on Oct. 27 at the Mansfield Community Center from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Normally this event is held outside, but since the weather wasn’t great, they moved it inside to the gymnasium, and had all the trunks set up for the kids.
I think it’s amazing that the CCE and the local community helps to put these events on for the kids that live around here. Having these happenings allows families to bring their children to a place they know will be a safe and fun space. Both “Malloween” and “Trick-or-Truck” were very child-friendly and give kids a chance to get out of the house and have fun. It’s important for local communities to have these kinds of events for their kids to attend. We live in a world full technology that almost forces kids to sit inside and watch television or play video games. These community occurrences help kids be active and get out of the house.
