APU students react to new ‘POKÉMON Detective Pikachu’ trailer

New Pokémon movie said to be released in the summer of 2019

On Nov.12, Warner Bros. Pictures —in partnership with the Pokémon Company and Legendary— released the first trailer for “Pokémon Detective Pikachu,” in theatres May 10, 2019.

The trailer features co-stars Justice Smith and Ryan Reynolds. Some other familiar faces including Pikachu, voiced by Reynolds, Charmander, Psyduck, Jigglypuff, Emolga, Squirtle, Bulbasaur and more.

The movie will be based on the game, Detective Pikachu, which was released Feb. 3, 2016. Based on the trailer, it seems that the main protagonist, Smith, has lost his father. By some sort of miracle he meets Pikachu, and the two team up to find Smith’s father.

Though much of the movie is still unknown, fans have already started spreading their opinions and theories across the web.

Astin Thomas, a sophomore kinesiology major, is one of many Pokémon fans who enjoyed the trailer. Thomas feels that it will take some time to get used to hearing the voice of Deadpool mercenary Ryan Reynolds as a “cute little Pikachu” but thinks it will grow on people once more trailers are released.

“I think the animations are going to be really good since the computer-generated images and other tools made the Pokemon look realistic, but not terrifyingly ugly,” said Thomas.

Madison Marasa, a sophomore at Pasadena City College, felt the computer animations made the Pokémon look scary but still thinks the plot of the movie will be exciting.

“The best part will probably be when he finds his dad or finds out why he can talk to Pokémon,” said Marasa.

Marcus Fernandez, a sophomore business major, believes the film will deliver positive results.

“For a movie that had no build up and came out of nowhere, I feel like it is gonna be great,” said Fernandez. “I like the story the trailer told, and the animation looks great. I will definitely be watching this movie when it comes out.”

This is a developing story. More updates will come as trailers are released and a final review will be published once the movie comes to theatres.
