Women’s basketball starts season with convincing win over Southwest

The women’s basketball team began its 2018 season against the Southwest Mustangs in a convincing fashion with a 90-47 win.

The game was over early as the Wildcats were led by junior guard Breanna Wright who scored 24 points shooting 8-12 in the game and contributed with her passing as well finishing with three assists.

Sara Williamson was also efficient, making five shots off of six attempts and finished with 14 points. The biggest contributor for the Mustangs was Harlei Haceesa who put up 10 points off of 4-8 shooting.

ACU’s defense forced 35 turnovers and limited Southwest to 38 percent shooting from the field. Meanwhile, the Wildcats shot 52 percent, made 11 threes in the game, and finished with  23 assists.

The women jumped out to a quick 26-14 lead at the end of the first quarter, but the onslaught would get worse throughout the evening even in garbage time as the Wildcats won the fourth quarter by a margin of 21-5.

Head Coach Julie Goodenough said their goal each game is to have no more than six turnovers per half, which they achieved in the first half but had a sloppy third quarter with the ball finishing the game at 15 turnovers. It’s something they’re looking to continue to improve on in practice and as the season progresses.

After starting the season 2-3, the Southwest Mustangs will travel West as they face New Mexico Highlands University next Monday. Meanwhile, the Wildcats will stay home, take almost a week off and prepare to take on Howard Payne University Thursday at 11 a.m.
